This breathing aimed to cool the body,

I had 3 of my own experiences with this

  1. a sore throat for 3 days and it's not getting better, I wake with a foul smell in my throat, and all day long, have gargle with salt water, gargle with iodine mouthwash, no significant changes, but after I tried this for 10 minutes during my drive, the sore throat became much better, the smells also reduced significantly.
  2. During the same drive around 1 hour, I also feel sleepy, the usual after lunch, and I try this breathing which wakes me up, I have tried multiple breathing for dealing with sleepiness during driving, and this one tops them all, other breathing I've tried is around 60%, while this is 90% alert.
  3. The next day a family of mine also coughed all day long, even after taking medication, drinking honey, and gargling using salt water which helped just a bit, but after trying this breathing the coughing reduced a lot from once every 90 seconds to once every 5-10 minutes.

So give it a try when you have inflammation, sore throat, sleepy during driving, or just want to cool off after exercise.

The key is to shape your tongue like a straw and put it between your lips to inhale, close your mouth, hold your breath, and then exhale through your nose. After 5 rounds you'll feel the cold in your tongue and it really helps a sore throat.

The steps are

  1. Inhale using your mouth through your tongue, slowly filling lungs and stomach for 10 seconds
  2. Hold your breath, while your mouth is closed for 5 seconds
  3. Exhale through the nose, slowly emptying lungs and stomach for 10 seconds

Repeat for 12 times or 5 minutes

This is part of pranayama breathing called sitkali
